COLORED PENCIL MEDIA
The Colored Pencil Society of America is an organization founded in 1990 to promote the use of colored pencil, provide exhibition opportunities for its membership and in general elevate the perception of colored pencil as a medium.
Basically colored pencil is a medium that (a) comes in a solid, hard, dry form, (b) cannot be brushed off, and (c) must dry completely. They lie someplace between soft pastels and oil sticks/pencils within these continuum.
Colored pencil techniques are also similar to those of other drawing or painting media. This includes blending, hatching and crosshatching to create complex colors and tones on paper.. There are even watercolor pencils that allow for the medium to be painted or washed.
CPSA performs on-going quality testing for lightfastness of suppliers to ensure maintain colored pencil as a fine art medium.
